What is Sylvera anyway? ‍👩‍👨🌳

Sylvera provides carbon data for genuine climate impact. Our mission is to incentivize investment in real climate action.

Purchasing credits through the carbon markets is one of the most established and scalable ways to channel finance from the private sector to effective climate solutions and work toward societal net zero. Unfortunately, the voluntary carbon markets have been plagued with mistrust and a lack of effectiveness since they’ve emerged – until Sylvera.

To help organizations ensure they're making the most effective investments, Sylvera builds software that independently and accurately automates the evaluation of carbon projects that capture, remove, or avoid emissions. With Sylvera's data and tools, businesses and governments can confidently invest in, benchmark, deliver, and report real climate impact.

Our team is made up of leading minds in climate change from scientists to policy, finance and carbon market experts. We work in partnership with scientific organisations, universities, governments and think tanks to develop and test rigorous and holistic ratings methodologies, leveraging the latest technology. Founded in 2020, Sylvera has 150+ employees across the world with offices in London, New York, Belgrade and Singapore. We’ve raised over $96million from leading VCs like Balderton Capital, Index Ventures and Insight Partners to date.

What will I be doing? ‍‍👩‍💻👨‍💻

We’re looking for a mission-driven Lead Engineer to lead our App Platform Team, reporting directly to our CTO. You will play an essential role in providing leadership for the team building core API-related components that sit between our data platform, and front end.

Specific responsibilities will include:

- Leading our Back End-focussed App Platform team. This team is dedicated to building common components that are reusable, minimising repetition of code, and facilitating best practices

- Devising and implementing clear strategies to shorten our time-to-value from data creation to customer deliverable, for the rapid creation of end to end solutions

- Applying an agile approach in terms of our development lifecycle, allowing us to build complex Back End solutions incrementally

- Playing a key role in the completion of the build and roll out of our public GraphQL carbon data API, ensuring compliance with non-functional requirements, as well as giving consideration for authentication and authorisation

- Longer term, as our apps continue to evolve, devising and implementing strategies for monitoring and scaling, to deliver industry leading reliability to our enterprise customers

- Mentoring and coaching our talented team of backend engineers in conjunction with our Principal Engineering function.

We’re looking for someone who: 🧠💚

- Can demonstrate extensive experience having designed and scaled public APIs (strong preference for GraphQL here)

- Embodies a ‘You build it you own it’ approach, with experience not just building out API platforms, but also ensuring these are reliable, secure, and performant.

- Is experienced with implementing an agile approach for rapid and iterative development, breaking down complex work and deliverables to drive incremental gains

- Has a hands-on coding background in Typescript/Node.js (and who wishes to remain 40% to 60% hands on!). We're also interested in Python/Django, but some experience with Typescript would be extremely helpful.

- Can demonstrate a strong delivery track record, with proven experience driving the strategic direction of a small agile team, whether in a Lead, Senior or Staff Engineer capacity.

We’d like someone highly ambitious, motivated and eager to propel their career forward. We prioritise grit, positivity, and the willingness to get stuck in, and encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't exactly match this job description
