The British Museum is seeking a Project Curator for Animal Mummies. This is a full-time, fixed-term role for 30 months, based in London. The salary is £33,803 per annum.
The role: You will be supporting the newly funded project 'Divine creature: Researching animal mummies in ancient Egypt'. The project aims to study the ancient Egyptian animal mummies curated at the British Museum and improve their analysis, documentation, interpretation, and conservation. You will work on animal mummification, zooarchaeological research, radiocarbon dating, CT scanning, and/or isotopic analysis.
Key responsibilities: You will work with the research lead in delivering the project, support, develop, organise and coordinate the various scientific analyses. You will conduct and support research centered around animal mummies, in line with the research objectives. You will coordinate logistics around x-ray analysis and CT scanning (in house and externally). You will support on upgrading the documentation of the collections that relate to ancient Egyptian animal mummies. You will contribute to publications in alignment with the project’s publishing goals.
About you: You should have a BA/BSc (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, experience of research and publication, good organizational skills, excellent time management, some expertise in Egyptology, animal mummification, zooarchaeology and/or radiocarbon dating. Some experience of working with a collection, some experience of management issues (people, projects, budgets), open, effective communicator with good spoken and written English, office management and general administration skill, assessing priorities and meeting deadlines.
