The United Nations University (UNU) is a globally recognized institution focused on research and capacity building to address critical global issues, in alignment with the United Nations' mission. For over 40 years, UNU has been influential in areas such as human survival, conflict prevention, and sustainable development. The UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) specifically advances knowledge on reducing vulnerability and environmental risks.

Within UNU-EHS, the WISE (Well-being, Indigenous knowledge, Sustainability and Equity) Division is seeking a candidate to contribute to a pioneering initiative that aims to redefine societal well-being, sustainability, and equity.

  • Literature review and development of data and policy models.
  • Integration of indigenous knowledge into sustainability debates.
  • Development of innovative research methodologies.
  • Conception of research projects and fundraising.
  • Contribution to training, teaching, and outreach activities.
  • Authoring research reports and policy briefs.
  • Ph.D. in a relevant field with a focus on transformation theory, social-ecological change, etc.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant professional experience, preferably in an international setting.
  • Strong methodological skillset for empirical research.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.

Well-being, Indigenous knowledge, Sustainability and Equity (WISE):

Within UNU-EHS the “Well-being, Indigenous knowledge, Sustainability and Equity (WISE)” Division is a pioneering science-to-policy research area. WISE aspires towards a holistic, beyond-GDP assessment of the preconditions for well-being, sustainability and equity, leveraging on indigenous knowledge. To transform towards a WISE society, this emerging initiative intends to bring together a broad range of interdisciplinary scientific expertise and indigenous knowledge necessary to understand the interface between well-being, sustainability and equity.

Responsibilities

Under the authority and the direct supervision of the Director of UNU-EHS, the successful candidate will be entrusted with the following tasks:



1. Contribute to the conceptualization and implementation of WISE Initiative

  • Literature review in the areas of beyond GDP approach, concept of wellbeing and equity;
  • Developing holistic data and policy models to weigh all dimensions of wellbeing, sustainability and equity for decision makers;
  • Identifying indigenous and other non-rationalistic knowledge systems which contribute to the advancement of sustainability and fostering the inclusion of such knowledge systems in the current transformation debates and discussions, especially through the lens of decolonization;
  • Leveraging indigenous and other non-rationalistic knowledge systems to enrich the current mainstream schools of thought in the areas of wellbeing, sustainability and equity and to enable cultural and mindset change towards sustainable and equitable societies focusing on wellbeing;
  • Developing a compelling narrative for the holistic WISE framework through data, creative methods and story-telling; together with the Director;
  • Contributing to the debate about and input into the post-2030 agenda based on WISE research; together with the Director.

2. Development of methodology

  • Lead the development of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies;
  • Lead the development of creative methodologies for innovative action research;
  • Steer collaboration with other divisions to co-develop and intertwine methodologies as a basis for joint research and projects;

3. Contribute to project conception and fund raisin

  • Conceptualization of research projects related to WISE;
  • Identifying funding opportunities and proposal writing for Third Party funding;
  • Support the Director with coordination with project partners together with other staff in the WISE team.
  • Engage with other divisions including in risk and adaptation department to identify joint research topics.
  • Co-supervise junior staff and student assistants as needed.

4. Contribute to training, teaching and outreach activities at UNU-EHS

  • Contribute to different dialogue formats and organizing programme-related events and planning processes;
  • Contribute to feeding project outputs into high-impact communication campaigns;
  • Contribute to network building with wellbeing focused research groups and organisations.
  • Feed WISE methodologies and research outcomes into teaching in the Joint Master of UNU-EHS

5. (Co-)Author research reports, policy briefs, factsheets, and presentations

  • (Co-)author scientific articles and present results at scientific conferences;
  • Contribute to reporting;

6. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

1) Education and certification

Ph.D. with high academic standing in social/environmental/psychology, behavioral science, cognitive studies, environmental education, education for sustainable development or another relevant field, with an emphasis on transformation theory, social-ecological change, indigenous knowledge and climate protection.

2) Required skills and experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant professional experience, some of which preferably in an international setting is essential; 
  • Strong methodological skillset for empirical research is essential;
  • Experience in working on transformation topics is an asset;
  • Proven experience in mixed-method research approaches is an asset;
  • Familiarity with concepts and methods in transformation research, climate change and human-nature relationship is an asset;
  • Excellent communication and writing skills (academic and non-academic);
  • Other Desirable Skills: Initiative, strong conceptual and drafting ability, interest in interdisciplinary and international work; Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.



3) Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset.

Remuneration



The successful candidate will be employed under a national PSA contract. UNU offers an attractive compensation package including an annual net salary, commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and a health insurance scheme.

UNU is not liable for any taxes that may be levied on the remuneration you receive under this contract. Payment of any such taxes remains the sole responsibility of PSA holders.


Duration of contract

The duration of the initial contract is 1 year. This is Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract with UNU, with the possibility for renewal subject to requirements and satisfactory work performance. The combined duration on a PSA contract with UNU may not exceed six (6) years. The mandatory age of retirement for PSA holders is 65 years.  This post is open to applicants from all countries and UNU will aid the
successful applicant in securing a work visa for Germany, as necessary. It is, however, a locally recruited post and no relocation allowances
apply. The duty station will be Bonn, Germany.
