Elizabeth Gaskell’s House was the Victorian home of one of Britain’s most celebrated authors, Elizabeth Gaskell (North and South, Cranford, Wives and Daughters). This literary house, located at 84 Plymouth Grove, is one of Manchester’s historic gems. We are a proud part of Manchester’s rich literary heritage and City of Literature UNESCO status. We celebrate the life and literature of Elizabeth Gaskell whilst providing our visitors with an experience of the house as it was in the mid 19th Century; a welcoming family home. Thanks to a major £2.5m project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and others, our beautifully restored Grade II* Listed heritage property is fully open to the public. Visitors can enjoy our spectacular period rooms, suburban villa garden, changing exhibitions and a Tea Room. We are situated just one mile from the centre of Manchester, just off Oxford Road, close to our friends at The Whitworth, Manchester Museum, and the Pankhurst Centre.
