Careers at Student Hubs

Student Hubs’s mission is to mainstream student social action, developing a generation of active citizens. We run programmes in partnership with UK universities, establishing ‘Hubs’ through which students are supported to create positive impact in their local communities. We currently have hubs in Bristol, Cambridge, Kingston (London), Southampton and Winchester.

Our work is based on a double benefit model: that social action benefits both the students who participate and the community in which it takes place. Students develop knowledge and awareness which enables them to become active citizens, improve their wellbeing through connecting to the world around them and enhance key skills necessary for graduate employment. Local communities benefit from needs-based bespoke activities, skilled volunteers, added capacity and the fresh thinking student volunteers can bring to a problem. Community participants benefit from learning from and with students, developing aspiration, skills and connections.

Escape's take on Student Hubs

Student Hubs’ vision is to create a society in which every student engages with social and environmental challenges during their time at university, empowering them to become active citizens for life. With some of the highest people scores in the competition, it’s clear Student Hubs is a great place to work. The team told us of a supportive and caring atmosphere, particularly given the events of the last 12 months. We’re thrilled to have Student Hubs as part of the Escape 100 this year!

    👭 Inclusivity
Within the organisation a lot of work and time goes into discussing how we can be more accessible and inclusive. At team days we will often have sessions dedicated to our operations and how we work, both internally and externally, and figure out how we can be supportive to volunteers and our community partners.

    👩‍👧‍👧 Team members
I think the team members are always supportive, reflecting on their own experiences to help you problem solve. The team is also very friendly and will always share in slack channels how their meetings have gone and any programme update or suggestions they have to help you down the line.

    Overall

Student Hubs allows for creativity within the projects we run. They also allow us to be flexible with our schedules and are highly wellbeing focused. The wellbeing friday feature they have allowed us to use, where every month we can take a half day on Fridays has really helped me and I think is very innovative.

    📣 Mission & Purpose
The values at the heart of Student Hubs is central to its existence and the purpose of the organisation is woven into everything we do, which is really beneficial for helping us to stay motivated on our work. Working closely to make lasting change on individuals, namely students from a wide range of backgrounds, and trying to influence more systemic change through working with institutions makes me feel hopeful about the future of the world.

    🏖 Flexibility
Student Hubs really acknowledges that in order to best support each team member, different levels of support are needed. The minimum leave policy along with the flexible working policy means that I can work when and how it suits me best. Even though we work with partners who work to a fixed schedule, Student Hubs challenges me to not get caught up in that way of working.

    😎 Autonomy
There's a great balance between autonomy and support, especially as we're a network organisation. There's trust and support to develop our own leadership and management skills, and we're trusted to bring our own local knowledge and passions to our work. However we're never left to struggle alone, there's lots of people to turn to and work collaboratively through challenges together.

    Overall

In the time I've worked at Student Hubs, there has been a continual commitment to improving the quality of experience for staff and ensuring we're all getting the most from our roles. This is unique in the charity sector where often staff are loaded with too much responsibility and very low pay. There has been a concerted effort to ensure that the organisation stays innovative and centres its people, be that staff, service users, or partners, at the heart of decision making.

    ⛑ Employee wellbeing
Our wellbeing Friday practices have supported me to manage my workload alongside other leave and manage my energy across the year. Student Hubs' approach is people-centred and employee wellbeing is at the heart of our approach and training for line management.

    👭 Inclusivity
We are a really inclusive team, everyone gets on really well and it's very easy to be part of our Equity, Inclusion and Diversity team, to feel included in what's happening in the network, and to feel a part of a strong team.

    🏖 Flexibility
The flexibility of working at Student Hubs is miles above what other organisations are offering. The minimum leave policies, wellbeing Friday, flexible working, and our regional approach means there is a high level of flexibility and autonomy that you don't get in other organisations.

    Overall

Student Hubs is a brilliant workplace, I have worked here in two different roles for a combined total of 5+ years and it remains an incredibly attractive place to stay and work. The policies are fantastic, the team is amazing and our cause driven work continues to inspire and energise me on a daily basis.
