The Big House was founded in 2012 by Maggie Norris, an actor, writer and director, in direct response to her work with ex-offenders. She was shocked to find out that while only 1% of children in the UK have been in care, 40% of youth offenders and 70% of sex workers are care-experienced. The Big House was set up to support young people leaving care to break the cycle of disadvantage that they may find themselves trapped in.
The Big House is a pretty special organisation. They exist to empower and inspire care leavers and at-risk young people to fulfil their potential. They do this by running a range of impactful programmes, including mentoring and coaching, and helping individuals overcome barriers to employment. Not only is the work they do so vital and impactful, but they also offer their team the chance to work remotely with flexible hours.
