Barnet Furniture Centre (BFC) is a furniture re-use project set up in 2011 and a not-for-profit registered charity that brings multiple benefits to the local community and surrounding boroughs. The objects of the charity are:
The relief, either generally or individually, of persons who are in need, hardship or distress. The advancement of education, vocational training or retraining and the provision of work experience particularly among unemployed people or people with special needs to enhance their prospects of employment, independence and quality of life. The protection and preservation of the environment for the public benefit by:
(a) The promotion of waste reduction, re-use, reclamation, recycling, use of recycled products, (b) Partaking in national and community schemes and projects for recycling and reusing materials, components, and resources. As an independent registered charity, Barnet Furniture Centre has been operating for nearly 13 years and has continued its dedication to the reduction, reclamation, and reuse of household furniture to provide affordable items to those in need. We have seen a significant increase, since 2017, in the number of families and individuals within Barnet and neighbouring boroughs coming to us as referrals for free furniture packages and heavily discounted items. To meet the demand for referrals, we are in constant need of essential household furniture. So how does it work? The donated furniture is collected by our dedicated collections team and returned to the Centre and sold on our shop floor. All household essential items are offered on a two-tier price strategy, with a lower price for people who are in receipt of benefits and in need. The charity relies solely on donations of household items from the local community and surrounding boroughs. Donations of furniture have provided the charity with a steady stream of stock. Donations of high-quality secondhand furniture have enabled the charity to attract members of the public to the warehouse who are not in financial need and who can afford to pay the higher market price on furniture items. All proceeds generated from these furniture sales are ploughed back into the Centre to enable the charity to help more of those in need. We run volunteer programs which provide practical skills, experience and confidence to enable individuals to enter into paid employment.
